Artık pek çok şirket, ürünlerini tanıtmak için bu tür ağları kullanıyor. Microsoft Türkiye’nin eski Genel Müdürü Çağlayan Arkan, şirketlerin sosyal paylaşım ağlarını küçümsememesi gerektiğini söyledi.

Kısa bir süre önce Microsoft dünya üretim ve küresel kaynaklar genel müdürü olarak göreve başlayan Arkan, ‘Yeni Normal Düzende İş Geliştirmenin Yolları’ seminerinde yaptığı konuşmada son dönemde tüketicinin, kurumların hayatına girmesiyle üretim sürecinin hızlandığını ve etki altına alındığını söyledi. Arkan, “Eskiden ürünlerin, tasarım ve üretim aşamaları üzerinde şirketler planlar yapardı. Ancak şimdi internetin gelişmesiyle tüketiciler de üretim hayatına girdi. Çünkü tüketiciler ürünleri diğer tüketicilerle gerçek zamanlı ilişki içerisinde değerlendiriyor. Bu aşamada Facebook, Twitter, MySpace ve başka insanların ortak paylaşım ağları önem kazanıyor. O yüzden interneti ve sosyal paylaşım ağlarını da üretim sürecine ekleyen şirketler kriz sonrası yeni ekonomik dönemde daha rekabetçi olacak.” diye konuştu.

Kriz sebebiyle yaşanan belirsizliklerin tümüyle ortadan kalktığını söylemek için henüz erken olduğunu ifade eden Arkan, ancak küresel pazarda bazı sektörlerin canlanma sinyalleri vermeye başladığını, gelecek yıl dünyada yavaş da olsa bir toparlanmanın sürpriz olmayacağını aktardı. Globe Telekom, Bharti Airtel, ve Reliance Communications firmalarının dahil olduğu bir anlaşmada yaklaşık 400 milyon dolar tutacak bir anlaşmaya imza atıldı. Asya kıtasına deniz altından uluslar arası bir kablo sistemi döşenmesi amaçlı oluştutulan dev projede Google ve KDDI Corp firmalarının da imzası bulunuyor.

Güneydoğu Asya-Japonya Kablosu adı verilen sistem saniyede 17 terabit kapasiteli olacak ve bu ileride 23 terabite yükseltilebilecek. 2012′nin ikinci çeyreğinde bitmesi planlanan proje için imza atan firmalar oluşturulan projenin şimdiye kadar yapılmış en yüksek kapasiteli sistem olduğunu belirttiler.

83 000 kilometre uzunluğundaki kablo sistemi sayesinde Singapur, Hong Kong, Endonezya, Filipinler ve Japonya gibi ülkeler daha hızlı bir internet erişimine kavuşacak. (Hürriyet)

Bharti, RComm in Google’s 23 kbps submarine cable consortium

A consortium including Google and KDDI Corp of Japan yesterday signed a deal to build and operate a $400 million international undersea cable system. Globe Telecom part owned by Singapore Telecommunications Ltd and Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications units are also part of the consortium.

The cable system, having a design capacity of 17 Terabits per second (Tbps) is named Southeast Asia Japan Cable, and can be upgraded to 23 Tbps, the highest capacity system to be built, the companies said in a joint statement.

The system is scheduled to become operational by the second quarter of 2012.

According to the statement the 83,000 km-long cable system would provide faster and more efficient broadband connectivity across Asia initially linking Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines and Japan.

Reliance Globalcom president and CEO, Punit Garg said that the company would now be uniquely positioned to provide customers voice, internet and data services across the entire Asian continent connecting the top 10 key business markets in Asia Pacific. (11 December 2009)

Time Warner-AOL ortaklığı bitti

Dünyanın en büyük internet servis sağlayıcılarından biri olan AOL (American OnLine), 7 aydır devam eden hazırlık sürecinin ardından resmen Time Warner’dan ayrıldı.

10 yıl önce TV’de ve gazete manşetlerini oluşturan haberlerle dünyaya duyurulan Time Warner-AOL evliliği, dün resmen sona erdi. AOL, hisselerinin bugün yeniden borsada işlem görmeye başlayacağını belirten gözlemciler, zaman içerisinde ISS’in çok değer kaybettiğini ve bugün itibariyle yaklaşık 2.5 milyar dolar pazar değerine sahip olduğunu ifade ediyorlar.

2001 yılında, “eski ve yeni medyayı” birleştiren anlaşma için çevreler, “yüzyılın anlaşması” nitelendirmesini yapmışlardı. Ancak, geniş bant teknolojisinin hızlı gelişimine zamanında adapte olamayan AOL, ’sihrini’ kaybetmiş, Time Warner’ın sahip olduğu yıldızlarla dolu prodüksiyonları bile şirketin rakiplerini yakalamasına yardımcı olamamıştı.

AOL, sahip olduğu Engadget gibi popüler teknoloji yayınlarına rağmen, reklamdan, internet erişim hizmetlerinden elde ettiğinden çok daha azını kazanabiliyor. 2002′de, 26 milyon kullanıcısı olan AOL’in bu günlerde 5.4 milyon abonesi bulunuyor. Virginia, home to AOL, the troubled web giant, calls itself ?the show-me state?. It?s a motto that Tim Armstrong, AOL?s boss, is keen on quoting and, as he is the first to admit, a challenging one to live up to.

The 38-year-old former Google executive rang the bell to open the New York Stock Exchange last Thursday, marking AOL?s first day of independence since its disastrous marriage to Time Warner 10 years ago next month.

?Today marks a rebirth for the company,? Armstrong said last week. ?America Online was one of the companies that put the most people online. I think we see the future of the internet being just as exciting.?

There is no arguing that AOL introduced a generation of people to the internet. In 2001, AOL had more than 30m members who used it as their first port of call on the web. It is still one of the biggest web firms on the planet, with 250m visitors a month, but its business is dying, according to analysts.

AOL?s original business, selling dial-up web access, is disappearing as people switch to broadband. At its peak, the company generated $9 billion (£5.5 billion) in annual revenue, with subscribers contributing the bulk of that money. Today AOL has only 5m subscribers. The company will still generate about $3 billion this year, according to Larry Witt, a Morningstar analyst, but as broadband internet penetration rises, he expects AOL?s subscriber base to fall and its revenue and profits to shrink with it. Armstrong?s ironic solution is to turn AOL into a 21st century Time Inc, precursor to AOL?s old partner Time Warner. The new AOL will be a web company producing its own content and making a living selling ads on the back of it.

?Content, advertising and communications? will be the backbone of the new AOL, said Armstrong. ?The 1990s were about access, this decade has been about platforms with companies such as Google, Facebook and Twitter. We believe the next wave of the internet will be about content.?

AOL owns a portfolio of websites including Moviefone, Popeater, Engadget and Mapquest. It had to leave with Time Warner the popular celebrity gossip site TMZ, but still owns Bebo, the social networking site.

AOL has been hiring top journalists and is producing 80% of its own content, but critics worry that ad sales alone are unlikely to keep it in the top tier of net firms as its old business dies off. Advertising on the web has been hit hard by the recession. For the first nine months of this year, AOL?s revenue dropped 24%, to $2.4 billion, while operating profits shrank 34%, to $765m.

?I have dubbed their strategy ?niche at scale?,? said Ben Schachter, an analyst at Broadpoint Amtech. ?It seems to me they are trying to build a lot of niche content sites and sell across all of them. I am not a believer in that strategy. They will have a difficult time competing against all the content that is out there and differentiating themselves.?

Schachter said that about 10% of visitors to AOL?s sites were probably coming from their old access business. As they fall away, so will AOL?s audience. ?If they can?t get the audience metrics going in the right direction, nothing else will matter,? he said.

Even if the advertising market picks up, the firm faces another hurdle. Next year, AOL will have to renegotiate its search advertising deal with Google, which powers web searches on the site. When AOL signed its deal in 2006, Google was still growing its business and had about 45% of the search market. Today that figure is closer to 65%. Witt said Armstrong is unlikely to get the same terms this time. Witt reckons search accounts for about a third of AOL?s ad sales, leaving the firm with another potential area of loss.

?Search is an important part of revenue but it?s not what we are betting the whole company on,? said Armstrong. While he didn?t name names, he said there were others in the market interested in the deal, most likely Bing, Microsoft?s rival to Google.

Armstrong is a force to be reckoned with: he was a key player in the building of Google?s advertising business. His arrival at AOL?s head office was greeted with a standing ovation and he is driving innovation in advertising.

AOL is building ?hyper-local? content and advertising aimed at smaller communities and their advertisers. The company has also won fans with the introduction of technology that gives advertisers real-time feedback on their ads, but as the company approaches its 25th birthday next year, he has a lot to prove. ?If it wasn?t for AOL?s history, people wouldn?t care at all,? said Witt.

Google’s Strange and Shiny New OS

Google is kicking its way into the operating system world with Chrome OS, an open source system that works almost entirely online. It says Chrome OS cuts down on things like malware and data loss, though privacy and Internet access may become issues. Meanwhile, “Modern Warfare 2″ exploded, Psystar’s legal defense imploded and Verizon’s lawyers unloaded.

Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) just keeps invading new territories, and its latest target is your computer’s operating system. It’s officially released the open source code for its Chrome OS, an operating system that will turn up in third-party vendors’ netbooks. Those devices should start selling next year.

With Chrome, Google takes a very different approach than major OSes like Windows, Mac OS, or even most Linux distributions. It’s sort of like what would happen if an Ubuntu mated with a Firefox. It’s basically a browser that does not run on an operating system — it is an operating system. All its apps are Web apps, and all the data you save using it is stored in the cloud, in a state of statelessness, as Google puts it. Very little data is actually saved on the computer’s hard drive.

The advantage, as Google describes it, is that boot-up times are extremely quick. Security is also easier to handle. If you aren’t hosting any data yourself, you also aren’t hosting any malware. Finally, if someone steals your Chrome netbook, and your password is nice and safe, then you’ll be able to reclaim all your data and settings simply by signing on to another Chrome netbook — which you’ll have to buy, of course, but some data’s worth more than a few hundred bucks.

The disadvantage is that a Chrome netbook probably can’t do a whole lot if you don’t have Web access. Then there’s the matter of privacy, with all your data stored on someone else’s servers.

Either way, Google doesn’t seem to be saying that Chrome is where you should live all the time. It’s described the first batch of netbooks arriving next year as companion devices, so that thirty-pound Mac Pro of yours in the basement doesn’t have much to worry about just yet.

YouTube, bu çerçevede NPR, Politico, The Huffington Post, The San Francisco Chronicle ve Boston’daki lokal WHDH-TV/WLVI-TV ile anlaştı. YouTube haber ve politika dairesi başkanı Steve Grove, yaptığı açıklamada medya kuruluşlarına, tercih ettikleri videoları kolaylıkla yayına alabilme olanağının getirildiğini ifade etti.
